Vision
Securing the best Winter Games ever as partners in safety, peace and celebration.
Mission
Safe and secure games through an integrated security model.
The Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit (V2010 ISU) is responsible for protecting athletes, officials, the Olympic Family, Internationally Protected Persons and for security at 30 locations which include support facilities, competition venues and non-competition venues such as the athletes’ villages and media centres in Vancouver and Whistler and training facilities.
In addition to duties in the areas of traffic management, accreditation screening and verification and protection of visiting dignitaries, the V2010 ISU is responsible for:
Venue security: Security of competition and non-competition venues is the major focus the security workforce. A variety of techniques will be employed to maximize the safety of athletes, coaches and spectators including security screening of people and vehicles entering the venues, perimeter fencing and CCTV cameras and perimeter patrols.
Aviation Security: Development of an integrated plan for modifications to existing airspace, including safety and security requirements, and enhancements that will be implemented during the Games.
Marine Security: Comprised of three key areas: marine patrol, the security of water side Olympic venues and the monitoring of vessel traffic within the Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound areas.
The V2010 ISU is led by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and comprised of the Canadian Forces, Vancouver Police Service and West Vancouver Police Service. In addition, personnel from the following agencies have worked with the ISU throughout the planning phases:

The 2010 Winter Games are truly Canada’s games. This is reflected in the composition of the security workforce. Police officers and Canadian Forces and private security personnel from coast to coast will be mobilized to secure the Games.
The private security personnel are responsible for security screening at the venues and will work under the direct supervision of a police officer.
V2010 ISU supports the Inner City Inclusively (ICI) Commitments Statement which was developed by a community advisory group working with the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation and was presented to the International Olympic Committee with Vancouver’s bid for the 2010 Winter Games. Through support of this Statement, the ISU committed to ensuring civil liberties, including the right to free speech, are protected under its security plans.
V2010 ISU recognizes that lawful advocacy, protest and dissent using legal methods are not matters for police concern. However, actions taken by those involved in these activities that are violent, criminal or unduly interfere with the rights and freedoms of others may result in police action and investigation. This is the same approach to protest by policing agencies in Canada used prior to the Games. If it is legal before the Games, it will be legal during the Games.
