A 59 year old, local Nanaimo man has been arrested and is facing numerous weapons offences in relation to a large cache of firearms located at his home.
Charges being recommended by police include: Possession of a Prohibited Device, Possession of Prohibited Weapon, Importing a Prohibited Device Knowing it is Unauthorized, Breach of Firearm Prohibition Order, Possession of Prohibited Weapon With Ammunition, Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unlawful, Making Automatic Firearms, and Unsafe Storage of Firearms.
The arrest came after a package addressed to the suspect containing prohibited devices was seized and reported to the RCMP. Due to the nature of the devices, RCMP investigators from the Island District Integrated Border Integrity Team and the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment, assisted by the South Island Emergency Response Team, executed a search of the suspect’s residence.
Located inside was a cache of weapons including: eight stun guns, four hand guns, over 5000 rounds of various ammunition, prohibited magazines, four UZI machine pistols, two M4 machine pistols, and three inactive grenades. Also seized was equipment used in the manufacturing of firearms.
“The sheer number of prohibited weapons in the suspect’s possession speaks to the seriousness of the charges,” says Inspector Dan Malo of the Integrated Border Integrity Team. “If these weapons were to fall into the wrong hands, it could become a serious public safety issue. The RCMP and our partner agencies nationally and internationally work closely together to prevent these types of occurrences.”
The suspect is currently being held in custody pending his trial.
