Following the long weekend where traffic safety initiatives were taken not only locally, but throughout several Police jurisdictions across the country, the Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services section will now be focusing on key intersections safety and enforcement.

“We are all well aware that the majority of collisions occur at intersections, whether they are controlled by traffic lights or not” said Sgt Dave Stewart of Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services. “As Police officers, what we see most often at intersections are red light and yellow light infractions, as well as speeding, failing to yield and disobeying traffic control devices or traffic lights. This traffic safety initiative focuses on promoting the safety of motorists by enhancing our presence at intersections throughout the Community”.

The warmer weather means an increase in kids, cyclists and joggers using intersections as a safe way to cross the street. Police officers will be working with other traffic safety partners such as members of the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU), Speed Watch Volunteer Groups and ICBC to promote safer driving habits.

"We want to get the message out that there is a lot going on at intersections. If people take the time to slow down and make smart driving decisions, we'll all benefit by being safer on the roads," said ICBC road safety coordinator Kathleen Nadalin.

“Although enforcement will be part of this safety initiative, what we are trying to accomplish is changing the habits of some of the drivers” said Cpl Bert Paquet, spokesperson for the Coquitlam RCMP. “Speeding through an intersection is not only a serious risk to other motorists and pedestrians, but usually only gets you closer to the next red light”.

On Wednesday May 26th at 1000 hrs. a.m., members of the Coquitlam Traffic Services will be focusing on the area along the Pitt River Road Corridor, especially the intersection of Pitt River
Rd and Shaughnessy St. in Port Coquitlam. Media representatives from ICBC and the Coquitlam RCMP will be on site as well. Media contact for ICBC is the Road Safety coordinator Kathleen Nadalin at 604-786-6455. More information and statistics are also available on the ICBC website.
