File # 2009-3304 4
2009-11-19 09:55 PST

Twelve days after being the subject of Canada Wide Warrants of Arrest, Shaun Richard Funk was captured last night, in Regina, Saskatchewan.  The warrants were issued on Friday, November 6th, as a result of extensive investigations into two separate incidents in Squamish and Ladysmith, BC. The Squamish incident occurred on August 28th, 2009, where a 39 year old woman was held against her will, sexually assaulted in Squamish, and then transported to Burnaby and sexually assaulted again. The Ladysmith incident occurred on September 26th, 2009, where a woman in her 50's was sexually assaulted by a man who broke in to her home.

Investigators in both Squamish and Ladysmith spent hundreds of hours investigating these crimes, with a focus on identifying a suspect, and apprehending him.  Those efforts paid off earlier this week, when investigators on Vancouver Island received information indicating Shaun Funk was in Regina, Saskatchewan.  As a result of the investigational work done by the Regina Police Service, Shaun Funk was located in a residence on King Street, in Regina at approximately 10:00 pm (PST) last night.  Funk was taken into custody without incident. Work is now underway to have Funk transported back to British Columbia, where he will face charges of Sexual Assault (x2), Kidnapping, Robbery, and Break and Enter.

"These crimes were stranger on stranger events, which are often the most difficult to solve", states Cpl. Darren Lagan of the Vancouver Island RCMP. "Despite this challenge, investigators were able to identify a suspect, and with the help of the public, the media, and our policing partners in Regina, were able to bring him in to custody."

The RCMP in BC thank the Regina Police Service for their assistance in this apprehension, as well as the countless media outlets who supported police efforts to warn the public, and apprehend Funk.

As this matter is now before the courts, police will be limited in their comment on investigational details.
