Vancouver, B.C. – The RCMP Integrated Counterfeit Enforcement Team in Vancouver would like to remind merchants of the importance of examining currency when accepting it over the counter.
Within the last two months, police have identified an increase in the number of counterfeit Canadian and American notes being passed through a variety of businesses in the Kelowna area.
The circulation of counterfeit notes historically increases during summer months and merchants are urged to remain vigilant year round, taking time to examine bills. Police recommend that you feel for raised surfaces that should be on the bill, tilt the bill and look for changing colors and images, look at and through the bill for a watermark, a see-through number and a woven security thread.
Further information on identifying Canadian counterfeit currency can be obtained by accessing the Bank of Canada website at http://www.bank-banque-canada.ca/en/banknotes/education/index.html
Information on identifying American counterfeit currency can be obtained by accessing

If anyone has information regarding the production or distribution of counterfeit bills they are asked to contact Crimestoppers, their local detachment or police force.
