Dossier nº 2008-EVAC 2008-06-10 11:00 PDT

Aux termes de la Loi sur les langues officielles, la GRC de North Vancouver n'offre des services au public qu'en anglais.

Under the Official Languages Act, North Vancouver RCMP detachment provides services to the public in English only.

On Wednesday, June 11th, 2008, more than 100 personnel, as well as airplanes, helicopters, fire trucks and police cars, will converge on North Vancouver. It may look real, but fortunately, it’s practice.

The interface fire exercise 'Operation Dry Lightning' is being hosted by the District of North Vancouver to give emergency workers insight into keeping you safe.

Located to the east of Grouse Mountain gondola, the drill will involve real smoke (courtesy of a special-effects smoke machine), massive sprinkler systems, mobile command centres, helicopters and an air tanker. If it’s a clear day, people will see the drill from quite far away. The RCMP wants to assure you that the event will be safe and tightly controlled.

North Vancouver RCMP and our partner agencies are constantly training, and this sort of large-scale scenario will test our ability to communicate with each other and perform an efficient urban evacuation. Firefighters, parks workers, rescuers and a variety of other provincial and local agencies will also be part of the drill. People who live near Grouse Mountain can expect police to knock on their doors between 9:00am and 12:00pm to ask basic questions, but residents will not have to leave their homes.

Since no amount of training can prepare for every eventuality, the RCMP would like to encourage you to help yourself and your loved ones by having a plan. Have enough water, food and battery-operated essentials to get through a minimum of 72 hours on your own. Have an evacuation plan for your house. If you’re not ready for a disaster, the North Shore Emergency Management Office (604-983-7440) offers free workshops on emergency preparedness. For a nominal fee, you can also update your first aid.
