Impaired driving, the non use of seat belts, aggressive driving and commercial vehicles are strategic priorities being focused on by the Fort Nelson Traffic Services in a continuing effort to reduce the incidence of fatal and serious injury crashes in the Fort Nelson area.
During the week of November 30th to December 4th, the Fort Nelson Traffic Services conducted increased enforcement in the Fort Nelson area focusing on commercial vehicles. A series of multi-agency road checks were conducted on December 2 to 4 on the Sierra Yoyo Desan Rd and Hwy 77
which sees a substantial amount of commercial traffic servicing the resources area of Fort Nelson during the winter months. The road checks culminated on the night of December 4th with a focus on impaired driving.
The road checks consisted of RCMP Traffic Services members, RCMP IRSU (Integrated Road Safety Units), CVSE (Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement), Work Safe B.C. and the Provincial Revenue Agency.
A total of 230 violation tickets and 191 written warnings were issued for violations ranging from speeding, seat belt compliance, dangerous goods to log book compliance. 13 commercial vehicles operators were placed out of service for lack of compliance and another 35 being temporarily taken out of service to meet compliance standards of lesser infractions.
8 twenty four hour driving prohibitions were issued with 3 being as the result of consumption of Controlled Drugs and Substances. 2 impaired drivers were taken off the road and charged criminally for impaired driving. 3 Drug seizures were made with one seizure being close to 100 grams of Cannabis Marihuana.
Further mutli agency road checks are planned for the remainder of the winter months.
