File # 2009-59396 2009-11-19 14:09 PST

Kelowna RCMP responded with Fire and Ambulance to a single vehicle collision on McKinley Rd, at around 9:30 AM this morning.

Investigation revealed that the female driver, the lone occupant, lost control of the car while traveling eastbound on McKinley Rd. The vehicle crossed the center line and went over the embankment and into the McKinley reservoir.

A passerby by witnessed the crash and called 911. Police responded immediately and with the assistance from 3 civilian males, the female was rescued from the sinking car. The police officers and the witnesses formed a human chain, broke through the back window, and helped the female out of the car.
The police officers and the civilians are not injured, but were cold.

The female was treated for shock at the scene and then transported to Kelowna General Hospital, where she remains. She is the registered owner of the vehicle and lives in the area.

Investigation continues. Police can confirm that the roads were a bit slippery and speed was likely a factor.

The highway was closed for the purposes of the investigation and for safe removal of the vehicle from the water.

Involved in the incident were: RCMP, Fire, HAZMAT, Ambulance, Police Dog Services and RCMP Dive member.

It's fortunate that there were people nearby to help the female and she was able to receive medical aid immediately.
