This is a response from Ridge Meadows RCMP to a blog by Global Television reporter Mike McCardell. His comments were posted on Global’s network website January 14, 2010.
Reporter McCardell tells about a man giving a 90-year-old veteran a ride to the older gentleman’s home. During the drive, the veteran feels a desperate need to relieve himself, so the driver accelerates trying to get the man to his home faster. However, the pair are stopped by Ridge Meadows RCMP for speeding.
Ridge Meadows RCMP confirms the ticket in question was issued on Remembrance Day, November 11, 2009 on the Lougheed Highway. The speed limit in the area is posted as 80 KMH. The violation was for traveling at 115 KMH.
For the record: when the officer learned of the older man’s situation, he took the driver’s licence and registration and allowed the pair to proceed to the veteran’s home. The understanding was later, the driver would return to the traffic stop for the citation.
Reporter McCardell also made the suggestion that the driver in the incident was pulled over by siren and flashing lights. The pick-up truck in question was “waved-in” by the police officer who was outside his vehicle and on foot at the time of the offence.
It is important to note that had the driver not been speeding, any potential delay that followed could likely have been avoided altogether.
